Updates, tutorials and thoughts – Chris
Hey everyone, here’s a quick report on some of the notes I took today.
Before we get into that, here’s an updated moodboard, with any images Carley and Alasdair didn’t like, removed, and the best pieces from both boards put together. We’ll call this the final moodboard, and from now on we should refer to this with all of the creative components of the project.
Secondly, I’ve got a couple of videos and tutorials I’d like to share that I think we could all benefit from. I spotted these two on a blog today and it reminded me of our project so thought I’d post them:
I know the subjects of the photos aren’t really relevant, but they both feature techniques on blending a simple photograph of a person into a background with intense graphics and colour—perhaps some food for thought later on.
Next, I’ve got these two videos by Qube Konstrukt and Apple, respectively.
This is a video that Qube Konstrukt (great studio from Melbourne) did, and when I was digging through my library the other day to look for some cool bits this one stood out—might not be entirely what we’re after but definitely something to check out for the 3D/EAV teams:
I’m sure everyone’s seen the Coldplay/iTunes ad, it not, here it is:
Notes
Dave, Dawn or Luke—feel free to add to this if you feel I’ve missed something, but here are the key points that I took away from the meeting today:
Moodboards
The overall response to the mooboards was positive, and from that we’ve now got a really refined selection of graphics to build our style by. Carley seemed to enjoy the idea of the “growth” concept we described, and looks forward to seeing what we come up with.
The moodboard above summarises all of the imagery we collected and seems to be the best selection of ideas relevant to the project.
Three Minute TV Spot
The main messages of the TV spot, referring to the event are;
- “doing something good”
- “building the future”
- and showcasing who benefits from the event, and what the benefits are
It should appeal to entities like the Government, corporate and potential future supporters. Carley mentioned that it’s hard to get sponsoring for an event like this as people tend to support (at least financially) campaigns and/or events more about indigenous people and/or people with disabilities, not one for young entrepreneurs. So it’s really important we portray the above messages and that these people are the “next big leaders of the country”.
It’s more of a long-term piece than the other deliverables and should feature footage of the following sorts of things;
- interviews with succesful corporate men and women
- people walking throughout urban environments
- buildings
- Sydney Harbour
- the head offices
Presentation & EAV
One thing to keep in mind with our designs is that colours need to be fairly saturated as they will appear a little washed out on the large displays, however it shouldn’t make a difference whether we work with a dark or light background.
Due to the time when we’ll actually be getting the photos of the finalists being quite a while a way, we don’t actually have to use them in the motion graphics. If we need to use people, we can use ourselves, actors, or even silhouettes, as long as it works with the theme and is appropriate! There should be about 12 – 15 photos being presented at the event (I didn’t quite get this bit, correct me if I’m wrong someone).
Lastly, Carely enjoys the contrast between the casual/creative persona and the corporate, or business-type (prime example is that great image in the middle of the moodboard which everyone loves). This should be worked into the visuals, obviously.
Other Notes
A couple of other pointers we need to keep in mind is that the YAA is very much a “guys and girls” thing and shouldn’t appear to be dominant by either one. Our moodboards only featured images of males throughout the graphics but Carley has put strong emphasis on the fact that this should not be the case with the final product!
Sponsors are only required to be presented with their respective awards and do not need to feature throughout the other graphics unless we are told otherwise.
Thanks everyone, let me know your thoughts.

Lovely! I think you’ve got everything spot on.
I felt that the meeting today went really well and gave us all much to think about.
The EAV team had a talk with Alisdair which went really well, we’ve got all our questions out of the way and he explained to us about alot of the technical side of things and gave a really thorough explanation. He also gave us heaps of ideas to explore and visualise and was encouraging us to think about the screen displays, music and lighting effects too. Apparently we can set the lighting to change colours and do all sorts of things on cue.
So theres plenty to discuss and explore!
and thanks for the tutorials Chris!

Great post Chris,
You have covered everything I had to say. The moodboard looks great.
I dont really have much more to add in regard to the notes for todays presentation.
The only thing I would highlight is the emphasis Carley placed on exposing the creative youth under the pin stripes.
With this in mind Carley did make the point that we should perhaps display the transformation by the students. This might mean a few simple images of the student leaping out of casual clothes and into the corporate suit. Or perhaps the message is more subtle and as the night progresses the images change from this casual youth to the corporate youth by the end of the night. Just an idea.
We have the big thumbs up from Carley. Its all go from here in and this means teams will really have to begin to make this project one of their top priorities. I am extremely exciting to see what ideas we can come up with and I know our execution will be flawless.
